Flax seeds are small, flat, and oval-shaped with a shiny, smooth surface, typically brown or golden in colour. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and antioxidants, making them nutritionally dense and valued for their natural health benefits.
Flax is believed to have originated in the Middle East and was one of the earliest cultivated crops. In India, flax seeds are primarily grown in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Odisha. The crop is sown during the rabi season (October–November) and harvested between February and April, depending on regional conditions.
India is among the top producers of flax seeds, although much of the produce is used for domestic consumption. However, India also exports flax seeds to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. With increasing global interest in plant-based nutrition, demand for Indian flax seeds continues to rise steadily.
