Quinoa seeds are small, round grains that come in various colours such as white, red, and black. Known for their high protein content, essential amino acids, fiber, and minerals, quinoa seeds are considered a superfood and are used in salads, porridges, and gluten-free products.
Quinoa is originally native to the Andes region of South America, but its cultivation has spread globally, including to India. In India, quinoa is grown on a smaller scale in states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, where cooler climates suit its growth. The crop is typically sown in the kharif season (June–July) and harvested around October–November.
Indian quinoa is gaining popularity both domestically and internationally. Exports are growing steadily, mainly targeting markets in North America, Europe, and the Middle East as demand for healthy and gluten-free grains rises worldwide.
